A ton has already been written on the life, career and personality of the brilliant Argentine attacker known as Lionel Messi. I don’t intend to add much to what has already been written because by now, you pretty much know the stuff that matters. However, in winning his 4th consecutive FIFA World Player of the Year or the Ballon D’Or as it is now called, a new kind of analysis is now called for—a new question and debate has to start making the rounds. That question has to be “Is Messi the greatest footballer of All time?”
At 25, Leo Messi, the indomitable attacking Maestro of Barcelona Football Club has won pretty much every award on offer except of course the World Cup title. In winning his 4th Ballon D’Or yesterday, he surpassed titans of the sport—names like Johan Cruyff, Michel Platini, Marco Van Basten, Franz Beckenbauer, Karl Heinz Rummenigge, Ronaldo da Lima etc. The shocking and outstanding thing about it all is that he won them all back-to-back and he still has a lot of years ahead of him to even win more.
At this point in time, with all the records he has smashed , and all the awards he has won, he is in my mind the best thing this sport has seen so far. Unfortunately for him, his detractors will never agree that he is the best owing to the fact that he has never won the World Cup. If he ever manages to win a world cup in the future, I think it will confirm beyond any reasonable doubt that this young bundle of talent is the best the game has ever seen. We wait to see what other fantastic things this young phenom will do.
